KashanKashan, a city in central Iran, has a magnificent history of carpet weaving dating all the way back to the 16th century. Scholars believe this is where the famous 'Ardebil' rugs were woven. Patterns can range from fields of Shah Abbas, to medallions, to pictorial scenes. Classic pieces show diamond-shaped medallions with matching spandrels on a floral field. The traditional color theme is red and blue, but more recently they have been woven in beiges with grey-blue and olive tones. Kashan rugs are made mostly of wool, however, you will find finer pieces in all silk with a foundation of cotton. |
